There was a commercial that was running recently pitching “non-monetary value” coins.  The coins were some kind of commemorative items – frankly I really don’t remember much about the coins.  A line in that commercial, though, caught my ear.  In trying to get viewers to act quickly, the voiceover said, “Avoid future regret.”

That line got me thinking about regret and doing things in the present to avoid regret in the future.

I think many people have regrets about things they did or didn’t do in the past.  The goal for building your happiness power is to not let those regrets diminish your happiness in the present or future.  Most of us probably have things we would have done differently.  But we have to realize that in the present we can’t do anything to change what happened in the past.

The only thing you can do with those regrets is to learn from them and to avoid future regret that might come from making the same mistakes.

When you’re presented with a choice, ask yourself if you would have regrets in the future about the choice you made.  Sometimes you have no way of knowing if you’ll regret your decision later on.  But other times, you have a gut feeling that the choice you’re about to make is something you’ll regret in the future.  In those cases, avoid future regret and make a different choice.

To your happiness!

I read the other day that on average we have 60,000 thoughts a day, most of which are negative.  I’m not sure how that figure of 60,000 was reached, but even if we say we have only a quarter of that number it’s still 15,000 thoughts a day, which is still a lot.

And if the majority of the thoughts we have are negative, it’s a lot of bad programming in our heads each and every day.

I’ve written before about being careful of the self talk you do on a daily basis.  The negative thinking is often natural and just comes up without us even realizing it.

When you find yourself with a negative thought, try to turn it around and put it in a positive light.  When you find yourself thinking, “I can’t” change that to say, “I can” instead.

As you continue to replace your negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll find it much easier to stay positive.

Since the beginning of this year, I’ve been trying to push my life in a certain direction.  The details of that aren’t important.  But I’ve expended a lot of energy trying to make something happen that just isn’t happening.

Along the way, I’ve gotten some signs that the direction I was trying to go wasn’t the direction I should be going.  But I wasn’t really paying attention to those signs.  Oh, I noticed the signs, I just didn’t pay attention to what they were trying to tell me.  Instead, I just kept pushing on trying to make something happen that clearly wasn’t meant to happen.

Well, today, I got another significant sign that I needed to change direction.  Finally, I’ve paid attention to this sign and all the others that have popped up in front of me the past three months.

Sometimes when things aren’t going the way we want them to, it becomes a matter of perseverance and persistence.  We need to keep pushing on, knowing that what we’re trying to accomplish is the right thing to do.  We keep going because we know that the accomplishment is worth the effort.

But then there are those times where the effort we expend isn’t really helping us accomplish what we need to accomplish.  I’ve realized that this is the case with the direction I was trying to go.  There comes a time when you realize you’re just swimming against the tide.  You come to the conclusion that what you thought you wanted isn’t really worth getting.

So, pay attention to the signs you get along the way.  If those signs are telling you that if you keep striving you’ll accomplish your goal, then by all means keep working at it.  But if those signs are telling you that you need to be going in a different direction, then make that change.  Even if you’ve already put a lot of work into it, it’s okay to walk away and start over.  You’ll be much happier in the long run.

A piece in the Wall Street Journal – Is Happiness Overrated? – cites a University of Wisconsin study that the “relentless pursuit of happiness may be doing us more harm than good.”  The researchers say that focusing too much on feeling happy can actually reduce happiness.

I can’t disagree with that.

Happiness can be elusive.  “Chasing” after it makes happiness even more elusive.  It is something that usually sneaks up on us.  We’re in the middle of an activity and suddenly realize we’re happy.

Your Happiness Power is designed to help you recognize those things that can help you increase those moments when happiness sneaks up and taps you on the shoulder.

You don’t need to chase after happiness.  Just stay open and aware and you’ll find happiness showing up more and more.

To your happiness!

There have been a number of articles over the last couple of days about the happiest states in the US with Hawaii coming in at number one.

According to a review of more than 160 studies, there is compelling evidence that happy people tend to live longer and have better health than those who aren’t happy.

According to University of Illinois professor emeritus of psychology Ed Diener, the author of the review, “We reviewed eight different types of studies, and the general conclusion from each type of study is that your subjective well-being—that is, feeling positive about your life, not stressed out, not depressed—contributes to both longevity and better health among healthy populations.”
